Sunflower Seed and Oil
The Black Sea oilseed whose world oil trade the Ukraine war scrambled.
Overview
Ukraine and Russia grow over half of world sunflower seed, roughly 50 million tonnes, and Ukraine had been the top oil exporter. The 2022 invasion, port blockades, and corridor deals disrupted shipments, lifting palm, soy, and rapeseed oil in its place and reshaping who fries on what. Sun oil is prized for frying and salads, and high oleic variants serve industry. The EU crushes seed and Turkey processes and re-exports oil. Prices quote at Black Sea ports against European references, and it remains the geopolitical oilseed: whenever the region fights, world vegetable oil reprices.
