Canola
The Canadian rapeseed variant with a healthy oil profile, traded on the Winnipeg exchange.
Overview
Canada grows over 20 million tonnes, the EU grows its rapeseed cousin at similar scale, and China is the top buyer of Canadian seed. Winnipeg trades 20 tonne contracts priced in Canadian dollars that follow the Chicago soy complex with a premium tied to oil content. Winter canola expanded in the US southern plains under crush demand. EU biodiesel takes most European rapeseed oil, and the Black Sea supplies extra. Canadian prairie weather, especially dryness, sets the crop, and Chinese trade disputes with Canada have twice halted seed flow, reminders that one buyer dominates the export channel.
