Salmon
Farmed Atlantic salmon, a seafood commodity priced week to week out of Norway.
Overview
Norway is the largest producer of farmed Atlantic salmon, followed by Chile, with Scotland, the Faroe Islands and Canada smaller producers. Fish spend a year or more in sea pens before harvest and are sold fresh across Europe, Asia and the Americas, so prices move weekly with harvest volumes, sea lice outbreaks, disease and seasonal demand. Weekly export price statistics and spot indices serve as benchmarks, and futures on Fish Pool, part of Euronext, settle against a salmon price index. Norway introduced a resource rent tax on aquaculture in 2023, and growth in licenses is governed by a traffic light system tied to sea lice levels along the coast.
