Tobacco
The leaf commodity of a shrinking but still enormous global industry.
Overview
China grows the most, Brazil, India, and Zimbabwe follow, with Zimbabwe tobacco a top foreign exchange earner and Brazil the top exporter of leaf. Types split flue cured virginia, burley, and oriental, sold at auction or through contract floors to leaf merchants who finance farmers and supply manufacturers. No terminal futures exist, so pricing is contract based. Demand declines in the West, grows in Africa and Asia, and leaf prices track manufacturer inventories. Regulation from flavor bans to track and trace shapes the trade, while vaping and nicotine pouches build a parallel demand for extracted nicotine. The crop stays politically entrenched as a smallholder cash generator.
